His attention <strong>and</strong> <strong>his</strong> time were largely engrossed by <strong>his</strong> business.<br />

He was at one time a member of the school committee of Worcester,<br />

but, other than that, he neither held nor sought public office ; <strong>and</strong><br />

among the various subjects of general importance agitated by the<br />

people, there was but one in which he actively participated. In<br />

regard to the use of intoxicating drinks, he was a " temperance man "<br />

to the extreme, <strong>and</strong> a tireless advocate of the cause in <strong>his</strong> daily inter-<br />

course with men. He gave to it liberal pecuniary assistance, <strong>and</strong> in<br />

1880 <strong>and</strong> 1881, he was the c<strong>and</strong>idate of the prohibition party for the<br />

office of lieutenant-governor of the Commonwealth.<br />

In religious relations he was a member of the Society of Friends,<br />

taking part in the business meetings of their organization, <strong>and</strong>, in the<br />

later years of <strong>his</strong> life, frequently " speaking in the ministry."<br />

Thomas <strong>Earle</strong>, like <strong>his</strong> twin brother, Timothy K., was educated<br />

at a public school, at Leicester Academy <strong>and</strong> the Friends' School in<br />

Providence, R. I. About the time that he reached <strong>his</strong> majority, he<br />

opened a retail shoe-store in Providence ; <strong>and</strong> some time afterward<br />

engaged in the same business in Worcester, Mass.<br />

In 1849, he <strong>and</strong> <strong>his</strong> brother, Oliver K. <strong>Earle</strong>, formed a copartner-<br />

ship under the firm name of T. & O. K. <strong>Earle</strong>, <strong>and</strong> purchased from
