Sept. 4, 1757, in Dartmouth (now Westport), Mass. ; m.<br />

May 12, 1778, Mary Cory (5. March 27, 1756), dau. of<br />

Thomas <strong>and</strong> Abigail Cory, of Westport ; <strong>his</strong> children<br />

were all born in Westport, but he removed, in 1814, to<br />

New Braintree, Mass. ; <strong>and</strong> d. 1833.<br />

He was commissioned Captain in 1781, afterward Major (in a regiment<br />

of which George Claghorn was Colonel), <strong>and</strong> Lieutenant-<br />

Colonel about 1799. He was Justice of the Peace, <strong>and</strong> Deputy<br />

Sheriff of Bristol Co., <strong>and</strong> a man of much energy <strong>and</strong> practical talent.<br />

1788, Feb. 27. "Robert Earl Capt's ear mark for <strong>his</strong> creatures<br />

is a slit behind the left ear, <strong>and</strong> a halfpenny behind the right."<br />

Major Robert Earl was gr<strong>and</strong> juror <strong>and</strong> Town Treasurer of West-<br />

port in 1790, <strong>and</strong> Town Clerk in 1790 <strong>and</strong> 1796.<br />
