<strong>and</strong> Anna M. (Stebbings) Partridge, of Englewood, 111.<br />

d. Sept. 17, 1883, in Boston, Mass.<br />

He was reared on the home farm <strong>and</strong> trained to toil, but attended<br />

the district school in winter. Ambitious <strong>and</strong> aspiring, he added<br />

much to t<strong>his</strong> rudimentary education by careful study <strong>and</strong> reading at<br />

home, without a tutor. If t<strong>his</strong> had its disadvantages it was not with-<br />

out corresponding benefits, for it taught him self-reliance <strong>and</strong> that<br />

confidence in himself which served him so well in after years. T<strong>his</strong><br />

trait of <strong>his</strong> character was always noticeable ; yet, if he was confident<br />

of <strong>his</strong> own abilities in every field which he entered, it was equally<br />

true that he entered no field which <strong>his</strong> abilities did not peculiarly<br />

qualify him to fill. Physically he was very strong <strong>and</strong> had great<br />

endurance ; <strong>and</strong> t<strong>his</strong>, added to a rare ability to apply <strong>his</strong> efforts to<br />

the best advantage, made <strong>his</strong> achievements on the farm something<br />

quite beyond the ordinary. In the school-room, as a pupil, he won<br />

a leading place ; <strong>and</strong> later, as a teacher, he made a high reputation.<br />

<strong>The</strong> bright <strong>and</strong> quick-witted pupils felt that their teacher shared with<br />

them the honors of success, <strong>and</strong> the dull <strong>and</strong> plodding learned from<br />
