in Woodbury, <strong>Connecticut</strong>. He married<br />

Sarah Thomas, born March 28, 1716, in<br />

New Haven, daughter <strong>of</strong> Israel and Sarah<br />

(Humphreeville) Thomas.<br />

(IV) Gad Bristol, second son <strong>of</strong> Elijah<br />

and Sarah (Thomas) Bristol, was born<br />

December 4, 1738, in Woodbury, where<br />

he made his home. He married, May 1,<br />

1760, Rachel Riggs, born January 23,<br />

1741, in Derby, <strong>Connecticut</strong>, daughter <strong>of</strong><br />

Ebenezer, Jr., and Rachel (Peck) Riggs.<br />

(V) Philo Riggs Bristol, second son <strong>of</strong><br />

Gad and Rachel (Riggs) Bristol, was<br />

born December 1, 1763, in Woodbury.<br />

He was a cooper by trade and lived in<br />

Oxford, New Haven county, Connecti-<br />

cut. He married in Southbury, January<br />

16, 1791, Nabbie Lyman, undoubtedly a<br />

daughter <strong>of</strong> David and Mary (Guitteau)<br />

Lyman, <strong>of</strong> Bethlehem. Both Southbury<br />

and Bethlehem were formerly a part <strong>of</strong><br />

the town <strong>of</strong> Woodbury.<br />

(VI) Captain Noah Russell Lyman<br />

Bristol, second son <strong>of</strong> Philo Riggs and<br />

Nabbie (Lyman) Bristol, was born June 9,<br />

1797, in Southbury, and lived in Canton,<br />

<strong>Connecticut</strong>, where he died September 8,<br />

1861. He was well educated for his day,<br />

and when a young man taught school,<br />

and learned the trade <strong>of</strong> cooper from his<br />

father. He spent his time at this occupa-<br />

tion until he was about fifty-five years<br />

old, when he engaged in farming on the<br />

grant now owned by his son in the town<br />

<strong>of</strong> Canton, <strong>Connecticut</strong>. He had settled<br />

in that town while a young man and<br />

served there many years as town clerk<br />

and justice <strong>of</strong> the peace, and also as rep-<br />

resentative in the State Legislature. In<br />

early life a Whig in political affiliation,<br />

he adhered to the Republican party from<br />

its organization until his death. He mar-<br />

ried Mary Barbour, daughter <strong>of</strong> Giles<br />

Barbour, <strong>of</strong> Canton, and they were the<br />

parents <strong>of</strong> four children : Volney R.,<br />

Keziah, wife <strong>of</strong> George White ; Burton<br />

H., and Anson Wheeler.<br />

(VII) Anson Wheeler Bristol, son <strong>of</strong><br />

Captain Noah Russell Lyman and Mary<br />

(Barbour) Bristol, was born June 9, 1840,<br />

in Canton, and has always made his home<br />

upon the paternal farm. As a boy he<br />

attended the public schools, and as a<br />

reader and observer <strong>of</strong> current events<br />

became a well informed citizen, enjoying<br />

the esteem and confidence <strong>of</strong> his contem-<br />

poraries. In 1861 he purchased the pa-<br />

ternal homestead consisting <strong>of</strong> fifty acres,<br />

which he sold in 1886, and bought his<br />

present farm <strong>of</strong> one hundred acres, onefourth<br />

<strong>of</strong> which is under cultivation. He<br />

produces considerable quantities <strong>of</strong> to-<br />

bacco, in connection with other farm pro-<br />

ducts, giving especial attention to dairying.<br />

In this he employs usually some<br />

twenty cows and also raises young stock<br />

and disposes <strong>of</strong> his milk to dealers. In<br />

1884 Mr. Bristol represented Canton in<br />

the Legislature and was a member <strong>of</strong> the<br />

committee on agriculture. He is among<br />

the most patriotic residents <strong>of</strong> the com-<br />

munity, and served his country during the<br />

Civil War for a period <strong>of</strong> eleven months.<br />

He enlisted in 1862 and became a mem-<br />

ber <strong>of</strong> Company I, Twenty-second Regiment<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Connecticut</strong> Volunteer Infantry.<br />

He is now a member <strong>of</strong> E. R. Lee Post,<br />

Grand Army <strong>of</strong> the Republic, <strong>of</strong> New<br />

Hartford, <strong>Connecticut</strong>, and is one <strong>of</strong> its<br />

past commanders. His political connec-<br />

tion has always been in connection with<br />

the Republican party. Mr. Bristol married<br />

Sarah E. Williams, <strong>of</strong> Brooklyn, New<br />

York, daughter <strong>of</strong> Absalom Williams, and<br />

a descendant <strong>of</strong> an old Massachusetts<br />

family. Mr. and Mrs. Bristol were the<br />

parents <strong>of</strong> twelve children, and are the<br />

grandparents <strong>of</strong> thirty-two grandchildren.<br />

Ten <strong>of</strong> their children grew to maturity,<br />

and they are : 1. Minnie, married George<br />

E. Bidwell, and was the mother <strong>of</strong> Jasper
