typhoid pneumonia, ..: East Granby, Con-<br />

necticut. lie married, at East Granby,<br />

she died April 8, 1905. Their children<br />

married Walter Oatley, and has two<br />

daughters, Josephine and Gynevere. 2.<br />

Milton, horn in December, 1874, married<br />

Mattie Griswold, and has one daughter,<br />

Mildred. 3. Waldo C, <strong>of</strong> the present bio-<br />

graphical notice. 4. Celia, born July 23,<br />

1885, married Louis J. Pinney, and has<br />

two sons, Lester and Waldo.<br />

April 11. 1882, at East Granby, <strong>Connecticut</strong>.<br />

His mother, Lois Nutley (Work)<br />

Smith, was the daughter <strong>of</strong> Hasting<br />

Work, a native <strong>of</strong> Wilbraham, Massachu-<br />

setts, wdiere he was a farmer all his life.<br />

Waldo C. Smith was educated at the pub-<br />

lic schools <strong>of</strong> his native region, and con-<br />

tinued on the home farm after his father's<br />

death. He is considered one <strong>of</strong> the im-<br />

portant and substantial farmers <strong>of</strong> that<br />

section, making- a specialty <strong>of</strong> bis tobacco<br />

and his dairy. He has about twelve acres<br />

in tobacco, a large amount <strong>of</strong> land for<br />

such an intensive crop. He keeps fifty<br />

head o\ cattle and also raises potatoes and<br />

corn. Mr. Smith has always followed the<br />

tradition <strong>of</strong> bis fathers in being an active<br />

participant in political matters, feeling it<br />

to be the duty <strong>of</strong> a citizen <strong>of</strong> a republic<br />

to bear his share <strong>of</strong> the duties and service<br />

<strong>of</strong> the common weal. He has represented<br />

his district in Coi and held other<br />

public <strong>of</strong>fices.<br />

Mr. Smith married Margaret Jane,<br />

daughter <strong>of</strong> Samuel and Sarah (Waugh)<br />

( )rr. Samuel ( )rr was born November<br />

15, [850, in * ounty Down, Ireland, and<br />

came to America at the age <strong>of</strong> en,<br />

locating at West Suffield, where he became<br />

a prosperous tobacco grower. He<br />

married a daughter <strong>of</strong> Hugh Waugh.<br />

Among the oldesl families <strong>of</strong> Connect-<br />

icut is that <strong>of</strong> Seymour, identified with the<br />

city <strong>of</strong> Hartford from its earliest begin-<br />

ning. The family is <strong>of</strong> great antiquity in<br />

England. On the will <strong>of</strong> Thomas Sey-<br />

mour, eldest son <strong>of</strong> Richard Seymour, the<br />

American progenitor, is the seal containing<br />

the device <strong>of</strong> the England Seymours<br />

from the time <strong>of</strong> William de St. Maur <strong>of</strong><br />

Penhoe. One
