Elizabeth, Marion Humphrey, and Edith<br />
Louise Bristol. 7. Christa, married Har-<br />
old William Humphrey; she died April<br />
20, 1919, and was mother <strong>of</strong> a son, Har-<br />
old William, Jr. 8. Sterling \\\, mar-<br />
ried Ruth Codaire, and is the father <strong>of</strong><br />
one child, Robert Austin Bristol. 9.<br />
( ttharine, married Myron L. Butler, and<br />
is the mother <strong>of</strong> one child, Robert I Bris-<br />
tol Butler. 10. Mary, became the wife<br />
<strong>of</strong> George L. Bidwell, whose ancestry is<br />
contained elsewhere in this work. The<br />
family is associated with the Congrega-<br />
tional church <strong>of</strong> Canton.<br />
The Barbour family, <strong>of</strong> which Mr.<br />
Bristol is a descendant, was founded in<br />
this country by Thomas Barbour, who<br />
came to Windsor in 1635, being then<br />
twenty-one years <strong>of</strong> age. He arrived in<br />
Xew England in the ship "Christian,"<br />
March 16, 1634, with the Saltonstall party<br />
under Francis Styles, and was a soldier <strong>of</strong><br />
the Pequot War. His wife. Jane, family<br />
name unknown, whom he married on October<br />
7, 1640, died September 10, 1662, and<br />

he died on the following day. Their third<br />
son, Samuel Harbour, born October 1,<br />
p ;'', in Windsor, resided on the paternal<br />
homestead, and died March 17, [708. He<br />
owned the halfwaj covenant at the Windsor<br />

Mr. Samuel Barbour, born 1714. lived in<br />
that part <strong>of</strong> Simsbury which is now Canton,<br />
where he died in 1707. He married<br />
(second) Hannah Humphrey, born June<br />
8, 1718, died 1819. daughter <strong>of</strong> Captain<br />
Noah and Hannah (Case) Humphrey, <strong>of</strong><br />
Canton, granddaughter <strong>of</strong> Lieutenant<br />
Samuel Humphrey, great-granddaughter<br />
<strong>of</strong> Michael Humphrey, founder <strong>of</strong> the<br />
family in Windsor. Her youngest child.<br />
Giles Barbour, born 1769, lived in Canton,<br />
and married Mary (iarrett, who died in<br />
iS'M at the age <strong>of</strong> eighty-four years.<br />
Their daughter, Mary, became the wife <strong>of</strong><br />
Noah R. L. Bristol, <strong>of</strong> Canton, as previously<br />
noted.<br />

To understand the meaning to a man<br />
<strong>of</strong> the honor <strong>of</strong> his family—to know the<br />
general status in a democracy <strong>of</strong> fam-<br />
ilies <strong>of</strong> old and honorable lineage, is to<br />
know and understand the meaning and<br />
brightness <strong>of</strong> the national honor. For<br />
this can never be any brighter than the<br />
honor <strong>of</strong> the family. This statement is<br />
nowhere more clearly and conclusively<br />
proved than in the Roman civilization, in<br />
which the dominant unit was the fam-
