from the Third District for member <strong>of</strong><br />
the Fiftieth Congress. He took his seat<br />
in the Lower House <strong>of</strong> Congress, March<br />
4, 1887. He served eight successive<br />
terms in Congress, and was nominated<br />
for the Fifty-eighth Congress, but his<br />
death occurred at Killingly, <strong>Connecticut</strong>,<br />
October 23, 1902, before the election. His<br />
eight terms in Congress were distin-<br />
guished by the same ability and popular-<br />
ity which had been characteristic <strong>of</strong> all<br />
his previous public positions.<br />
Mr. Russell married, in 1880, Ella Fran-<br />
ces Sayles, daughter <strong>of</strong> Sabin L. Sayles,<br />
<strong>of</strong> Killingly, <strong>Connecticut</strong>. The widow and<br />
two children, Sabin S. and Deborah, sur-<br />
vived him.<br />
GOODSELL, William Orlando,<br />
Merchant.<br />
The Goodsells <strong>of</strong> Bristol, <strong>Connecticut</strong>,<br />
trace descent to Thomas Goodsell, a native<br />
<strong>of</strong> Wales, who came to New England<br />
from Liverpool, England, about 1678, and<br />
located in East Haven, <strong>Connecticut</strong>. His<br />
son, Rev. John Goodsell, was educated at<br />
Yale College, and was the first minister<br />
settled over the Church <strong>of</strong> Christ, on<br />
Greenfield Hill, in 1726.<br />
Samuel Goodsell, <strong>of</strong> Southington, <strong>Connecticut</strong>,<br />
married Lucy Horsington, and<br />
they were the parents <strong>of</strong> nine children, as<br />
follows: Amasa, born July 16, 1779; Samuel,<br />
born August 26, 1781 ; William, born<br />
December 19, 1783 ; Lucy,<br />

Dennis; Betsey, born in 1788; James,<br />
born in 1790; Augustus, born February<br />
3, 1794; and Josiah, <strong>of</strong> further mention.<br />
Josiah Goodsell was born in Southington,<br />
June 9, 1796, and died in 1872. He<br />
learned the carpenter's trade and became<br />
a contracting builder. He was a captain<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>Connecticut</strong> militia, a man <strong>of</strong> public<br />

sell married Eunice Lester, and they were<br />
the parents <strong>of</strong> six children : Elnora, Sarah<br />
Ann, Eliza, Mary, Lester, and William<br />
Orlando, <strong>of</strong> further mention.<br />
William Orlando Goodsell was born in<br />
New Hartford, <strong>Connecticut</strong>, March 27,<br />
1847, an d was educated in the public<br />
schools. He spent the early part <strong>of</strong> his<br />
life on a farm, but in 1872 located in Bristol,<br />
<strong>Connecticut</strong>, where he was employed<br />
in the E. N. Welch Clock Factory for five<br />
years. He then removed to Burlington,<br />
<strong>Connecticut</strong>, where he was engaged in<br />
farming and lumbering, there remaining<br />
until 1884, when he moved again to Bris-<br />
tol, and in 1890 established in business as<br />
a dealer in flour, feed and grain, first open-<br />
ing in the Tuttle building. When the in-<br />
crease <strong>of</strong> business made larger quarters<br />
imperative he moved to the new Elevator<br />
building, there continuing in successful<br />
business until his retirement. He then<br />
turned the business over to his sons, Lester<br />
W. and Samuel J., who still conduct<br />
it along the same successful lines. In<br />
Burlington, Mr. Goodsell was selectman<br />
for two terms, and president <strong>of</strong> the Plainville<br />
Creamery.<br />
Mr. Goodsell married (first) November<br />
22, 1880, Annie M. Dewey, who died February<br />
14, 1914, leaving children: Mary<br />
E., Lizzie J., Sarah A. ; Lester W., who<br />
died at the age <strong>of</strong> nine years ; Edward<br />
Dewey, and Samuel J.<br />

E. Pettibone, widow <strong>of</strong> James Pettibone.<br />
TALMADGE, Col. Benjamin,<br />
Soldier <strong>of</strong> the Revolution.<br />
Colonel Benjamin Talmadge, who served<br />
with distinction during the Revolutionary<br />
War, and enjoyed in highest degree the<br />
confidence <strong>of</strong> Washington, came <strong>of</strong> a<br />
