Kilburn et al. (1990) reported a cross-sectional <strong>and</strong> cross-shift study <strong>of</strong> respiratory<br />

symptoms among workers in a plant manufacturing nuclear reactors using a <strong>steel</strong><br />

containing approximately 10% nickel, 18% chromium, <strong>and</strong> 7% molybdenum. Results<br />

from these workers were compared with data from a stratified r<strong>and</strong>om population <strong>of</strong><br />

340 men, previously reported by Miller et al. (1986). Cross-sectional data were<br />

analysed for 90 welders <strong>of</strong> <strong>stainless</strong> <strong>steel</strong> <strong>and</strong> "black <strong>steel</strong>" (no details <strong>of</strong> these two<br />

<strong>steel</strong>s were given; it is possible that the "black <strong>steel</strong>" is carbon <strong>steel</strong>). This analysis<br />

showed an increased incidence <strong>of</strong> "chronic bronchitis" (18%) among those included in<br />

the study. Both mean FEV1 <strong>and</strong> FVC were significantly lower than predicted values<br />

(94.5% <strong>and</strong> 95.4% <strong>of</strong> predicted values, respectively; p
