man" vi^ill continue to make "countless millions<br />

mourn," <strong>and</strong> find vent f<strong>or</strong> all evil passions justified<br />

by <strong>the</strong>ir idea <strong>of</strong> God. But, some w^ill say this is all<br />

a thing <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> past. Mankind, especially in Christian<br />

countries, have outgrown <strong>the</strong>se relics <strong>of</strong> Barbarism,<br />

Alas ! if it were only true. We do not<br />

drown, <strong>or</strong> burn, <strong>or</strong> t<strong>or</strong>ture physically, but quite as<br />

subtle t<strong>or</strong>ture to <strong>the</strong> sensitive is found in sc<strong>or</strong>n,<br />

contempt, ridicule, <strong>and</strong> ostracism, in sl<strong>and</strong>er <strong>and</strong><br />

defamation <strong>of</strong> character. Are we any nearer genuine<br />

bro<strong>the</strong>rhood today than we were a century ago?<br />

<strong>or</strong> have we but refined our cruelties <strong>and</strong> merely disguised<br />

<strong>the</strong> claw <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> tiger? Do not supreme<br />

selfishness <strong>and</strong> relentless greed lie at <strong>the</strong> heart <strong>of</strong><br />

competition? Are not <strong>the</strong> Trade Unions <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

"M<strong>or</strong>als <strong>and</strong> Dogma, p. 1G2 et seq.
