<strong>the</strong> Cubical City—which unfolded becomes a cross,<br />

<strong>and</strong> hence <strong>the</strong> "measure <strong>of</strong> a man"—all <strong>the</strong>se refer<br />

to <strong>the</strong> w<strong>or</strong>k <strong>of</strong> regeneration, <strong>or</strong> initiation.* <strong>The</strong> rebuilding<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> temple after <strong>the</strong> plan drawn upon <strong>the</strong><br />

Trestle-board, by which it shall be like that spiritual<br />

temple, not made with h<strong>and</strong>s, plainly refers to initiation<br />

from which results perfect prop<strong>or</strong>tion <strong>and</strong><br />

perfect harmony. In a later section <strong>of</strong> this w<strong>or</strong>k<br />

this ma<strong>the</strong>matical <strong>and</strong> geometrical basis <strong>of</strong> virtue<br />

<strong>and</strong> wisdom, <strong>or</strong> knowledge <strong>and</strong> power, will be fur<strong>the</strong>r<br />

explained. It is unknown to <strong>the</strong> Craft <strong>of</strong> Masonry<br />

except in its bare outline <strong>and</strong> cruder symbolism:<br />

it is nowhere hinted that <strong>the</strong>re is an inherent<br />

relation <strong>and</strong> full equivalent between absolute ma<strong>the</strong>matics<br />

<strong>and</strong> spiritual power.<br />

"A very limited knowledge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hist<strong>or</strong>y <strong>of</strong><br />

primitive w<strong>or</strong>ship <strong>and</strong> mysteries is necessary to enable<br />

any person to recognize in <strong>the</strong> master mason,<br />

Hiram, <strong>the</strong> Osiris <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Egyptians, <strong>the</strong> Mithras <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Persians, <strong>the</strong> Bacchus <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Greeks, <strong>the</strong> Atys<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Phrygians, <strong>of</strong> which <strong>the</strong>se people celebrated<br />

<strong>the</strong> passion, death <strong>and</strong> resurrection, as Christians<br />

celebrate today that <strong>of</strong> Jesus Christ. O<strong>the</strong>rwise,<br />

this is <strong>the</strong> eternal <strong>and</strong> unvarying type <strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong><br />
