llower planes <strong>of</strong> life by s<strong>or</strong>e trial, by bitter conflict,<br />

by frequent defeat, by hope deferred, almost despairing,<br />

he has at last renounced self utterly, <strong>and</strong> so<br />

become "dead to <strong>the</strong> w<strong>or</strong>ld." This is <strong>the</strong> "Great<br />

Renunciation." An Infinite Compassion f<strong>or</strong> all that<br />

lives takes possession <strong>of</strong> his soul, <strong>and</strong> an infinite<br />

peace settles within his spirit.<br />

"Believe thou not that sitting in dark f<strong>or</strong>ests, in<br />

proud seclusion <strong>and</strong> apart from man; believe thou<br />

not that life on roots <strong>and</strong> plants, that thirst assuaged<br />

with snow from <strong>the</strong> great Range; believe thou not,<br />

O Devotee, that this will lead <strong>the</strong>e to <strong>the</strong> goal <strong>of</strong><br />

final liberation."<br />

"Step out from sunlight into shade, to make<br />

m<strong>or</strong>e room f<strong>or</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs." . . .<br />

" 'Tis from <strong>the</strong> bud <strong>of</strong> Renunciation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Self<br />

that springs <strong>the</strong> sweet fruit <strong>of</strong> final liberation."<br />

"<strong>The</strong> selfish devotee lives to no purpose. <strong>The</strong><br />

man who does not go through his appointed w<strong>or</strong>k in<br />

life has lived in vain."<br />
