<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> present century is <strong>the</strong> close <strong>of</strong> a great cycle:<br />

namely, <strong>the</strong> first cycle <strong>of</strong> five thous<strong>and</strong> years <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Kali Yuga. Aside from unusual astronomical conjunctions,<br />

many perturbations in spact;, earthquakes,<br />

cyclones, <strong>and</strong> tidal waves, <strong>the</strong>re are also predicted<br />

great social upheavals, political changes, <strong>and</strong> both<br />

mental <strong>and</strong> physical epidemics. In o<strong>the</strong>r w<strong>or</strong>ds, as<br />

is already apparent to all who read <strong>the</strong> signs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

times, <strong>the</strong> present is a transition period, <strong>and</strong> whatever<br />

influences are to mold <strong>the</strong> coming century must<br />

begin <strong>the</strong>ir operations at <strong>the</strong> present time. This is<br />

<strong>the</strong>ref<strong>or</strong>e <strong>the</strong> seed-time, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> harvest will be by<br />

<strong>and</strong> by.<br />

Note—Many references in literature might be adduced<br />

giving accounts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> existence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Great<br />

Lodge. Two <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se may here be mentioned, viz.,<br />

that given in <strong>the</strong> Life <strong>of</strong> Apollonius Tyanseus <strong>of</strong> his<br />

visit to <strong>the</strong> Adepts <strong>of</strong> India, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> account <strong>of</strong> Flamel<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Adepts in an old book called Hermippus<br />

Redivivus, by Campbell. <strong>The</strong> present object is, however,<br />

ra<strong>the</strong>r to unfold a philosophy than to ga<strong>the</strong>r<br />

facts; to explain what a Master may be, ra<strong>the</strong>r than<br />

to point out <strong>the</strong>ir abodes.
