Principles <strong>of</strong> Education <strong>and</strong> Ethics. 57<br />

Karma into <strong>the</strong>se unfav<strong>or</strong>able conditions as <strong>the</strong> result<br />

<strong>of</strong> its own acts in a f<strong>or</strong>mer life, would not only<br />

put f<strong>or</strong>th all <strong>of</strong> its energies to rise, but would be<br />

f<strong>or</strong>everm<strong>or</strong>e repelled by such degrading influences<br />

as now surround him, <strong>and</strong> flee from <strong>the</strong>m as from a<br />

pestilence.<br />

Here we come face to face with <strong>the</strong> real problem<br />

<strong>of</strong> education. How shall we educate? With <strong>the</strong><br />

children <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> po<strong>or</strong>, <strong>and</strong> even with many <strong>of</strong> those<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> middle classes, <strong>the</strong> <strong>or</strong>dinary curriculum <strong>of</strong><br />

School <strong>and</strong> College <strong>of</strong>ten serves to inculcate ideas<br />

<strong>of</strong> luxury <strong>and</strong> contempt f<strong>or</strong> lab<strong>or</strong>, <strong>and</strong> results, in<br />

parents are ambitious that <strong>the</strong>ir children should be<br />

educated, in <strong>or</strong>der that <strong>the</strong>y may escape from, hard<br />

w<strong>or</strong>k, <strong>and</strong> have an easier time in life than <strong>the</strong>y have<br />

had <strong>the</strong>mselves. In m<strong>or</strong>ality, <strong>or</strong> ethics, <strong>the</strong> children<br />

are taught certain precepts, <strong>or</strong> are required to recite<br />

certain religious f<strong>or</strong>mula, such as <strong>the</strong> Creed <strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Catechism; <strong>the</strong>y are very seldom, however, taught<br />

unselfishness <strong>or</strong> self-conquest. <strong>The</strong> result is that<br />

<strong>the</strong> innate perceptions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> child, which are naturally<br />

far keener than most people are aware <strong>of</strong>,<br />

<strong>and</strong> which invariably, unless cultivated, become<br />

blunted with age <strong>and</strong> w<strong>or</strong>ldly experience, are utterly<br />

disregarded, <strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong>y are blunted by <strong>the</strong> very system
