3.0 EXPLORATION HISTORY
3.1 Regional History
During the early 1980's the McOermott gold deposit was discovered
by American Berrick Resources Inc. in Holloway Township along the
McKenna Fault which is a splay fault off the Destor-Porcupine
Fault. The Holt-McDermott mine started production in 1988 and now
is at 1800 tons per day. The present reserves are 5.1 million
tons grading 0.15 oz. per ton gold (N.M. June 10,1991). A new
deposit, the Mattawasaga deposit was discovered about one half
mile east of the shaft during 1991 along the Ghostmont Fault. The
present reserves are two million tons grading 0.18 oz. per ton
gold (N.M. June 10,1991). These deposits consist of mineralized,
altered (silicified, carbonatized) basalts. The gold is
associated with pyrite (N.M. 6/10/91).
The Lightning Zone was discovered in Holloway and Harker
Townships by Noranda, Freewest and Newmont in 1988. The zone
occurs along the mafic-ultramafic volcanic contact just north of
the Destor-Porcupine Fault. The reserves are 5.5 million tons
grading 0.27 oz. gold per ton (N.M. October 7,1991).
