CHAPTER 22<br />

Rebecca<br />

ebecca watched David from the door of her family‟s<br />

R big, compartmented tent. Her parents had their<br />

sleeping quarters and she shared hers with her little broth-<br />

er, Daniel. It was an arrangement that appealed to neither<br />

of them. She had placed a yellow flower in her hair. It<br />

came from a native hibiscus and suited her complexion.<br />

She knew Daniel would make fun of it but didn‟t care. Her<br />

thoughts were on David. The subtle colors enhanced her<br />

hair and jet-black skin. She had rubbed her face with moisturizing<br />

cream to make it glow. Her father had forbidden<br />

the use of make-up but he couldn‟t stop her using skin care<br />

products. Her mother had taken her side in that argument<br />

and they‟d won.<br />

Daniel was lolling in a hammock. Her little brother had<br />

once hero-worshipped David. He‟d pulled him from the sea<br />

and helped him struggle onto land. Now he regarded David<br />

with suspicion. His former „hero‟ was now a „weirdo‟.<br />

Amongst other things, Daniel claimed that David had sto-<br />

len his radio. Rebecca had little doubt the radio had been<br />

confiscated by her father who would lecture her brother on<br />

the evils of disobeying parental authority. Father was being
