He reached the creek and found<br />

the dog barking furiously. He<br />

scarcely heard it above the din.<br />

Water cascaded over boulders<br />

and formed whirlpools where it<br />

forced its way underground. On<br />

the opposite side, two figures<br />

were dashing through the under-<br />

growth in a mad race to reach<br />

him. Janet arrived first. The old<br />

infantry rifle hung about her<br />

shoulders and she looked as if<br />

she was ready to take on the<br />

world. She ran along a fallen tree that stuck out over the<br />

creek.<br />

„What gives, Davo?‟<br />

„They‟ve got Anne. They‟re trying to take her away.‟<br />

„What?‟<br />

„The little girl is Sue Lynne‟s daughter. The man is Harald.‟<br />

Janet looked down at the raging waters.<br />

„Message understood. Get going, Davo. We can‟t cross<br />

here. We‟ll continue on our side and join forces at the bottom<br />

of the creek.‟<br />

The dog streaked ahead and David followed. He wasn‟t<br />

prepared to question the animal‟s judgment any more. They<br />

were going in the general direction of the airfield and that<br />

was all that mattered.<br />

The dog led with its nose and favored tracks made by<br />

kangaroos and wallabies. David was forced to crawl beneath<br />

bushes and clamber over rocks in the full glare of the sun.<br />
