The headlights topped the rise. Noelene flashed the all-<br />

clear signal and David flashed the signal arranged with<br />

Humphrey. The headlights flashed in reply and he relaxed a<br />

little. Everything was going to plan. The oncoming vehicle<br />

would now slow and stop beside him.<br />

But it didn‟t!<br />

It screeched to a halt and a figure in combat gear jumped<br />

out and hit the road running. David scrambled to a different<br />

position and crouched beneath a bush. Lightning lit the scene<br />

and a continuous roll of thunder beat his ears. For a while<br />

nothing happened. Then, amongst the roaring of the wind, he<br />

heard his name.<br />

„Davo …‟<br />

At first he thought his ears were deceiving him. Then he<br />

heard it again and there could be no mistake. No one sound-<br />

ed like Janet Pulnitz.<br />

„Jan! I‟m over here.‟<br />

She landed beside him. „Who flashed back there?‟<br />

„Noelene … I told you about her.‟<br />

„You didn‟t say she‟d be with you.‟ Janet slumped down.<br />

„We thought it was a bloody ambush. You could have told us<br />

what was going on. The first rule in any operation is to pro-<br />

vide adequate intelligence …‟<br />
