The headlights topped the rise. Noelene flashed the all- clear signal and David flashed the signal arranged with Humphrey. The headlights flashed in reply and he relaxed a little. Everything was going to plan. The oncoming vehicle would now slow and stop beside him. But it didn‟t! It screeched to a halt and a figure in combat gear jumped out and hit the road running. David scrambled to a different position and crouched beneath a bush. Lightning lit the scene and a continuous roll of thunder beat his ears. For a while nothing happened. Then, amongst the roaring of the wind, he heard his name. „Davo …‟ At first he thought his ears were deceiving him. Then he heard it again and there could be no mistake. No one sound- ed like Janet Pulnitz. „Jan!
