In the light of day David was able to examine his compan-<br />

ion. He was aged in his forties and clearly very good at what<br />

he was doing. But why did he do it? David wondered if the<br />

man had been seduced by the cult of the perfect warrior.<br />

He‟d felt the fascination himself and had rejected it, only to<br />

pick it up again. Now he knew there was something profoundly<br />

perverse about it. He‟d seen what it did to people. It<br />

was something to avoid. He‟d got a glimpse of Charlie‟s<br />

world and was determined not to follow Charlie down the<br />

same path.<br />

Towards late afternoon, they reached their goal. A sign<br />

above a rusty petrol drum announced that they had arrived<br />

at Kendall homestead. The Landcruiser pulled up. They<br />

shook hands. David was handed his swag. He hoisted it onto<br />

his back and set off wearily towards a group of dilapidated<br />

farm buildings.<br />
