Sir George<br />

he weather was dry in Canberra and a light breeze<br />

T was blowing from the south. Kirstin glanced at the<br />

grandfather clock in the hallway. It was almost 6 pm. Sa-<br />

mantha Fischer had delivered her letter to the Pagets the<br />

previous evening. There had been ample time for them to<br />

react but nothing had happened. Perhaps she‟d guessed<br />

wrong and there was no connection between Aunt Grace and<br />

Rosie.<br />

Then the telephone rang.<br />

„Kirstin … it‟s me.‟<br />

Cecilia Paget was as flustered as ever.<br />

„It‟s daddy. I don‟t know what to do. He‟s just got back.<br />

He tried to see the head of the Prime Minister‟s Department.<br />

I think they thought he was mad. No one knew who he was.‟<br />

„Did he get my note?‟<br />

„No. But he got one in Chinese from someone called Cher-<br />

ry Blossom.‟<br />

Kirstin reached for her coat. „Cecilia, I‟m coming round.‟<br />

„Yes. That‟s why I phoned. Daddy is desperate to speak to<br />

you.‟<br />
