„Item twelve. Charlie is engaged in a vendetta against Rosie.‟<br />

Janet pulled a face.<br />

„What makes you think that?‟<br />

„Because Doris told David that the suitcase contained<br />

something which would be damaging to Rosie.‟<br />

„But it was Sue Lynne who told David to collect the suitcase.‟<br />

Janet reached for a pen.<br />

„Okay! I agree with what you‟re saying.‟<br />

Humphrey went to the cupboard for another bottle of red.<br />

Kirstin watched as he filled their glasses. She was feeling<br />

tired and the conversation was leading nowhere. Janet and<br />

Humphrey were drinking too much. Anything useful would<br />

have to wait to the morning when they might remember some<br />

of the clever ideas they‟d had when they were drunk.<br />

„I‟m off to bed.‟<br />

She glanced at the case diagram which Humphrey had<br />

sketched, rose wearily to her feet, climbed the stairs and was<br />

about to enter her room when she heard the muted sounds of<br />

ballet music.<br />
