he butchers‟ paper was out on the kitchen table, held<br />

T in place by sticky tape and half-filled wineglasses. It<br />

was covered in the multi-colored diagrams that Humphrey<br />

regarded as essential to any investigation. The time was 9<br />

pm. The place was the Hansen residence. Elizabeth was in<br />

her room and could be heard dancing to her ballet records.<br />

Humphrey presided over the table like a general marshalling<br />

his troops.<br />

„A picture is beginning to emerge …‟<br />

He spoke in a voice Janet would once have found irritating<br />

but now recognized as the way Humphrey talked when his<br />

mind was totally concentrated on the task in hand.<br />

He reached for a black pen.<br />

„Item one. The Tom Lee journal has identified Doris and<br />

Rosie as sisters – or half-sisters. Rosie is his granddaughter<br />

by his son, Edward, whom he regarded as a waster. In contrast,<br />

his son James, who became a distinguished surgeon,<br />

was the apple of his father‟s eye.‟<br />
