KING FAHD UNIVERSITY OF PETROLEUM AND MINERALS DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING Electronic Circuits II – EE303 Experiment # 9 Op amp Based Sinusoidal Oscillators OBJECTIVE 1. To investigate the operation of sinusoidal oscillators using operational amplifiers, specifically, the Wein-Bridge oscillator, phase shift oscillator, and the quadrature oscillator. 2. To vary the frequency and amplitude of oscillation. BACKGROUND The Wien-Bridge Oscillator The Wien-Bridge oscillator is shown in Figure 1. It can be shown that when Rp Rs R 1 R2 and Cp Cs C , the frequency and condition of oscillation will be wo , 2 CR R 1 respectively. However, one must select R 2 /R 1 slightly greater than 2 to make sure that oscillations will start. Thus R 2 will be replaced by a variable resistor (potentiometer) that is varied until oscillations starts. Stop at the value of R 2 that results in minimum required gain to sustain oscillations. Amplitude Controll Althogh the frequncy of oscillation of an oscillator circuit can be therotically calculated. The amplitude of oscillation remains unknown. A simple limiter can be used for amplitude control as shown in Figure 2. When R 6 =R 7 and/or R 5 =R 8 are varied the output swing will change.
