shaped geometry cannot be documented. 96 Hiscott et al. (19R6) have commented on the inappropriateness of using lhe fan model in cases where a) Ihe shape of the depositional system is not known. b) it is nOI known whether there were one or more fudtr channels and c) paleotlow is consisfently along the axis of the basin. All of these criteria apply to the American Tickle formation. Hiscott et al. (1986) suggest Ihat if the term fan is to be used then it should be specified the system was 'grossly oversupplied' and that lhe deposil shape was determined by basin shape. The foreland basin in which Ihe American Tickle formation was deposited was not a trench, sensu stricto. as it was constructed on continental rather than oceanic crust (see. for example, Quinlan and Beaumont, 1984). However, patlerns of deposition may still be understood in terms of a trench model, such as thai outlined by Underwood and Bachman (1982) and Bachman (1982), as the overall geometry and other tectonic features are similar. Underwood and Bachman (l982)aOO Bachman (1982) again emphasised that th¢ elongate gC{lmetry of trenches renders it inappropriate in most cases 10 interpret facies associations using the deep sea fan model. Instead, Underwood and Bachman (1982) adopted a 'convergent margin facies model' basing their facies clas5ification on publications by Walker and Muui (1973) and Ricci Lucchi (1975). This model is summari:;ed in figure 3.1. Facies classes shown in the Underwood and Bachman (\OS2) model are broadly similar to those of Pickering et al. (\986) (see table 3.1 for equivalencies).
