70 abut tile allochthons An overall east west progradation of the sandstones apparemly took place if the aJJochlhonous sandstone was deposited in the same basin as the parauuxhthonous succession. Gonzalez-Booorino (1990) has stated that it was. but did nm discuss his evidence. This question will be addressed in more detail in chapter 3. Two distinct parautochthonoLis sandstone units, the American Tickle formation and the Mainland formation. are present in the Goose Tickle Group. Only one allochthonous sandstone L1nit, me Lower Head Formation, has been recognised here. The Lower Head Formation is late Arenig to ?L1aooeilo in age. The Mainland and Amerkan Tickle formations arc arltaSl panly lime equivalent and are middle Llanvirn co ?Caradoc in age. The available information reveals no obvious progradational relationship within the Lower Head Fonnalion, but the Lower Head Formation is alleast one graptolite zone older at its base thansaoostone oflhe Goose Tickle group. The American Tickle formation is characterised by argillite and sandstone with a limestone conglomerate member and a polymici conglomerate member. StenzelI.'I al. (]990) have stated that the limestone conglomerate of the Daniel's Harbour Member contains clasts of platfonn sedimenls which underlie the American Tickle formation. The polymict conglomerate of the Howe Harbour Member is restricted to localities where the American Tickle fonnation is stRlcturaJly overlain by the Northwest Arm Slice of the Hare Bay Allochthon. and the: clasts within the conglomerafe are clearly deriv~ from

The exact nature of [he conglomerates in each unit will be addressed in chapler 3, but it is clear thaI in hoth paraulochthooous and allochthoOO\ls fonnalions at least pan of the detrital content is derived from immediately adjacent units.
