17' volcanic rock fragments of all three lonnations, are almost never found as separate grams. 4233 Potassium Feldspars Apparently relatively unaltered, and in many cases very well rounded grains of microcline (type 1) are common. Under cathode luminescence lhese lumine~e bright blue suggesting that they have a high grade metamorphic or plutonic origin. On staining. however, it is clear that many of these grains have a patchy tCJlilure, with the pal~hes consisting of albite (plate 4.3). At first. the author suspected thaI this was an artifact til' the staining method. but SEM and cathode luminescence studies as well as more careful optical,SlUdies (plale 4.4) confinned that these features are real. In l.:ertain cases. the palches appear 10 coalesce and the impression of an albite grain ahered to microcline around its edges is given. If these twO features arc related, this would sUI;J;est that the 'patchy' textures of many microclines arise from relict albite, rather than reprelieming an irregular 'blebby' perthile Slnicture. In other cases, microclilll: grains have Ocen panly altered around the edges to albite, True penhite (type 2) is also found in these samples and contains stringy blebs of albite in potassium feldspar. A lhird type of feldspar (type J) consists of rounded cloudy mkroclme with indislinct tanan tWiMing in some cases, and no twiMing in others, This type: aGain displays cores of albite (and was referred to above in the discussion of plagioclase feldspars), and commonly has an vel)' ahered appearance. The albile cores mimic the shape of the grain. and hence again this is interpreted as the incomplete alteration of
