derived from older allochlhonous5edimel'llS. or 10 Slevens (1970) who simply stated that
the Taconic allochthons were a source of detritus (Stevens. pen. comm., 1987; Hiscou,
'transgressed' (prograded) across the margin from cast 10 west was suggested by
Williams and Stevens (1914), and was repeated by BolSford (1988). and Cawood et al.
~QPE AND PURPOSE
This thesis presern the resullS of an investigation intO the depositional seniog,
pror.mnce and possible sources of Ordovician flysch (foreland buin deposits) of wes!:cm
NC'IItfoundlaod.
The study as origimlly dcsigoed bad a twofold purpose;
a) To rtrlne the existing 5Ualignphic oomenclatwe for Ordovician saDdslones in western
Newfoundland, which was dis."'rpnised and largely informal; and
b) To detcnninc provenance of the Ordovician flysch in lhis region. Particular emphasis
was placed on a clarification of the influence of nearby allochtbollOUS slices on detrital
composition.
SiJll;C the objcct was a regional investigation of flysch provenance, both
allochthonous and autochthonous units of Ordovician flysch wert included in the study.
