ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
This research could not have been carried out without the cooperation of
certain individuals, particularly those in Ghana. On behalf of my late
husband, I would like to thank the following people especially, for their help
and support:
- The staff of the Centre for Development Studies, University of Cape
Coast, Ghana, for their logistic support.

Ven:ruijsse. During the author's absence in Ghana, he 100 ked after the
financial matters of the research project in Abura Dunkwa, for instance,
the payment of salaries to the path cutters and supervisors.
-- The farmers of Abura Dunkwa for the tolerance and patience shown
during extensive periods of interviews. A few should be mentioned
specifically, viz: Nana Budukumah; Nana Osam Kwesi V; the hired
labourers whose task it was to cut the footpaths (in most cases an
extremely difficult job) especially Mr Addison and Mr Gardiner; Yaw
;Barimah for his moral contribution in the field; and Mrs Agnes Kwegyir, '
who deserves special mention for providing hospitality in the form of
comfortable accommodation and delicious meals.
- Mrs Jean Sanders, for her skilful editing of this manuscript.
- DlfS. Paul Haanen for his stamina during thefieldwork periods, and for
his continuous support and cooperation in the completion of this
mamuscript after the death of Emile Vercruijsse.
