This research could not have been carried out without the cooperation of<br />

certain individuals, particularly those in Ghana. On behalf of my late<br />

financial matters of the research project in Abura Dunkwa, for instance,<br />

the payment of salaries to the path cutters and supervisors.<br />

-- The farmers of Abura Dunkwa for the tolerance and patience shown<br />

during extensive periods of interviews. A few should be mentioned<br />

specifically, viz: Nana Budukumah; Nana Osam Kwesi V; the hired<br />

labourers whose task it was to cut the footpaths (in most cases an<br />

extremely difficult job) especially Mr Addison and Mr Gardiner; Yaw<br />

;Barimah for his moral contribution in the field; and Mrs Agnes Kwegyir, '<br />

who deserves special mention for providing hospitality in the form of<br />

comfortable accommodation and delicious meals.<br />

- Mrs Jean Sanders, for her skilful editing of this manuscript.<br />

- DlfS. Paul Haanen for his stamina during thefieldwork periods, and for<br />

his continuous support and cooperation in the completion of this<br />

mamuscript after the death of Emile Vercruijsse.<br />
