A sslect delegation hag visited Spain and Portugal, and
aleo Greece, making contact with the leaders at all the left-wing partie.
and political formations. and With the Greek authoritias.
All these talks took place with the official entry of Greece into
the BEC on l January 1981 in mind and the .rrival at the European
parliament on that date of 24 Greek Hambers, raleing the varioue
problems which will come up during 1960, i.e. the transitional p.riod
between official ratification of Greek accession and the date on which
it actually joins the European institutions.
In any event, the approach which the Socialist GrOUp is inclined
to t.ke is for a9ricultural policy to have two closely connected airos
The talks with Andreas PAPA1~REOV. together with most of the leaders
of the PAS OK , were extremely fruitful. It was clear that, despite the
reservations of PASOK on Greek member~ip,
to see its representatives sitting as membere of the Sociali.t Group,
1he action taken by the community over the last few years has not
met thsse requirements, since it has been concerned mainly with price
prOblems and has not devoted SUfficient attention to tlle structural
prOblems of the market and of produCtlon.
For this reason tho Socialist Group is urging the European
Parliament to devote .. major cebat. to the prOblema of the Common
AgriCUltural Policy and has acco~in9ly .et up • Working party to
prepare for that debate.
