Welcome to the
first Journal from
The Grimsby
Institute of
Further & Higher
Education
by its Principal and Chief Executive,
Professor Daniel Khan MA, FCCA, FAIA
It is with great pleasure that I
introduce the first issue of the
Institute’s new journal.
The journal will showcase the scholarly
activity undertaken by members of the
Institute’s staff and our partners, in
particular those engaged in teaching on our
higher education courses, a number of
whom are currently undertaking taught and
research-based higher degrees. Much of
what follows evidences hard work and
commitment to their respective subject
areas.
Teaching informed by research activity will,
by its very nature, enhance the pedagogical
process and raise the status of those
involved in delivery. The Institute is
committed to doing everything that is
possible to support this process to ensure
the research, particularly action-based
research, becomes fully embedded within
the culture of the organisation. It forms part
of our wider commitment to our local
population to provide high quality
undergraduate courses.
early Access Movement, has experience in
teaching in the Further Education sector and
a career-long commitment to widening
participation in higher education from
under-represented groups. His article and
his current research project are particularly
apposite at a time when the spotlight is on
higher education within further education as
never before. My personal thanks to him.
As with all academic journals FOCUS
should be viewed as an arena of debate. It
will not shy away from controversial topics
which are presented in a rigorous academic
manner and do not descend into polemic.
Finally, I would simply like to add that higher
education has made great strides within the
Institute over the past few years. This is to
the credit all those involved in its delivery,
organisation and support. This new journal
is one more step on the road to the
Institute’s re-definition of itself as a fully
integrated further and higher education
establishment.
It is our intention to invite an external
academic to contribute to each edition and I
am particularly pleased that Gareth Parry,
Professor of Education at the University of
Sheffield, agreed to be the first such
contributor. Gareth was a luminary of the
FOCUS
