Demand for this product just keeps growing and we’ve had to change the way we do things in the Shipping Department to keep up. I’ve been with the company for 15 years and I’ve seen tremendous improvements in how we ship products. When I started with Siemon all orders were on paper. Pickers used to walk down the isles of the warehouse with plastic carts and climbed up and down ladders to pick products off the shelves. Today everything has changed. We’re completely paper-less. All products are bar coded and electronically scanned. The carts and ladders are gone as well. Our motorized pickers lift employees as high as 25 ft. (7.6 m) in the air to pick products. Back in the early days, we had fewer products and shipping was easier. Back then, 66 blocks accounted for the bulk of our orders. Today we have over 11,000 different products and it’s my job to make sure that orders are shipped out correctly the first time. Electronic scanning has helped order accuracy a great deal, but it’s not enough. Every order we ship out is checked twice to ensure accuracy. I think my department has the most important job in the company. We’re the bridge between The Siemon Company and our customers. We must get product out the door quickly and accurately to satisfy thousands of customers around the world. I’m proud of the changes we’ve made and confident that we’re ready for 2001 and beyond.
