Distinguished Educator: Kathleen Rushing Klein Oak High School “Some memories of high school that will linger with me forever happened in the band hall, in the cafeteria, in the parking lot, and even in the chemistry lab. The memories that I will keep from that chemistry lab are of my favorite teacher. She is always so kind, generous, knowledgeable, and helpful. I always feel so at home in her classroom whether I am learning a lesson, decorating her board, taking a test, working on an Internal Assessment, or making Borax ornaments for Science Club. Specifically, what she did to impact my education was to simply teach me chemistry. I had a hard time at first but through her help and guidance and amazing ability to make science fun, I was able to master the subject, and this boosted my self-confidence in mastering other subjects in school. Mrs. Rushing, thanks for making chemistry fun and for being my teacher.”

However, all of that was to change under Mrs. Parent’s tutelage. Mrs. Parent allowed me to express myself in ways that I had never conceived of before, by being spontaneous and creative, while at the same time learning new and exciting things and opening myself to ideas and topics I had never considered before. I discovered how to laugh and interact with my teachers beyond the traditional student-teacher relationship, transforming those relationships into mentor and mentee, all due to Mrs. Parent allowing me to make that initial bond with her. Mrs. Parent also exposed me to my first taste of AP classes, and helped to prepare me for the requirements for all of my future AP classes. Above all, Mrs. Parent’s personality and teaching helped me to learn to be myself in the classroom, and to never shy away from that, no matter how quirky that character may be.”
