“When I signed up for band as my elective in sixth grade, I was a little hesitant about my decision. My
fears subsided the moment Ms. Walker started class with a smile, and I soon knew that band was where
I belonged. Her passion for music quickly became apparent during our rehearsals and was impossible
not to share. I still remember the rhythm grid we practiced every day in band class. Ms. Walker made
what otherwise would have been a tedious exercise entertaining by having us draw a random path
through the rhythm grid, sometimes diagonally or backwards, and attempting to play the result. Her
enthusiasm and exciting approach to teaching were what inspired me to become a band director.
Even through my high school years, her continued support has fostered my growth as a musician and
encouraged me to pursue all of my musical dreams.”
