The Manor of <strong>Lackham</strong> <strong>Vol</strong> 3 : The Montagu family<br />

George was born at <strong>Lackham</strong> in 1751 415 . It has been said that “George<br />

Montagu was just an upright simple-minded English country gentleman<br />

who loved Natural History” 416 but there was far more to him than that.<br />

George Montagu was born, in 1751 or 1755 417 , at <strong>Lackham</strong>. He joined the<br />

15 th Regiment of Foot 418 in 1767, when he was 16 years old and married<br />

Mary Ann the eldest daughter of William Courtenay and Lady Jane<br />
