twice 132 . Henry was elected Recorder of London in 1603 133 and an MP for<br />
the capital the next year, both of these appointments being for extended<br />
periods 134 .<br />
1603 was a momentous year as Queen Elizabeth finally died and James V of<br />
Scotland became James I of England. Henry Montagu II was knighted by<br />
the new king two days before his coronation 135 . This was not the high<br />
honour it was previously; certainly on his way to London from Scotland<br />
(which was when Henry received his knighthood) James was “scattering<br />
knighthoods with remarkable prodigality 136 ” .<br />
In 1611 Sir Henry was appointed Serjeant at Arms and the King’s Serjeant<br />
and was Chief Justice of the King’s Bench between 1616 and 1621.<br />
When he was appointed Henry made note that his motto was “deo regi legi”<br />
ie, god then king then law 137 . He promised that he would follow in his<br />
grandfather’s steps and that “ having a private fortune will despise bribery”<br />
