The Manor of Lackham Vol 3 : The Montagu family
Sidney 206 , Edward 207 , Charles 208 , William 209 Thomas 210 , John 211
Katherine 212 and Mary 213
of these four died young, Henry (age at death not known), Walter 6
months, Charles 8 months and William just over a week. To lose this
number of children in the first year of life was not, of course, unusual
although that did not stop the loss of children being deeply felt.
Little is known of many of the children but Mary married Thomas Ewer of
Bushey Hall, Herts 214 . Mary and Thomas’ son Henry sold another of their
manors, Meriden, to the brothers John and Lewis Rogers of New
Brentford in 1715 215 so Thomas must have died between 1701 and 1715.
206 LPR Bap son of Capt James Montagu between 29/10/1643 and 14./1/1644 (actual
date not given, but these are the dates either side of the entry)
207 LPR Bap son of Capt James Montagu 12 th June 1646
208 LPR Bap son of Capt James Montagu 5 th July 1647; LPR Bur son of Captain Montagu
3 rd Nov 1647 so aged almost 4 months
209 LPR Bap son of James Montagu 7 th Oct 1748 LPR Bur 15 th Oct 1648 so he only lived a
week after his baptism
210 LPR Bap son of James Montagu 5 th November 1650
211 LPR Bap John, son of James Montagu 13 th December 1653 John has not previously
been identified, as far as I know, which seems strange, but the record is very hard to
read
212 LPR Bap daug of James Montagu 22 nd Jan 1652
213 Is shown in the Wiltshire Visitation of 1665 but not in the parish records
214 On 15 th July 1672 (LPR) Bushey Hall is in the Parish of Bushey in Hertfordshire. The
original Bushey Hall was up in the north of the parish next to the River Colne. Bushey
Hall Farm is still there today but the manor house was pulled down in the early part of
the nineteenth century [Annal, D (2005) at
http://www.hertfordshire-genealogy.co.uk/data/places/places-b/bushey-hall.htm] .
It would appear that Bushey Hall was sold by Sir Robert Marsham, Bart, in 1701 to
Thomas Ewer. [VCH Hertfordshire (1908) vol 2 p180]
215 VCH Hertfordshire (1908) vol 2 Merden Manor pp 451-464
