The Manor of <strong>Lackham</strong> <strong>Vol</strong> 3 : The Montagu family<br />

By the seventeenth century the Wiltshire manor of <strong>Lackham</strong>, secure in its<br />

bend of the River Avon between Chippenham and Lacock, had only known<br />

two families since the Norman Conquest, the Bluets and the Baynards 4 .<br />

In 1635 the Baynard heiress, Mary, married James Montagu I, the third<br />

son of the 1 st earl of Manchester. This marriage transferred <strong>Lackham</strong> to<br />

what became the Wiltshire branch of the Montagu family, 6 generations<br />

of whom became Lords of <strong>Lackham</strong> “and so <strong>Lackham</strong> was lost to the<br />

Baynards” 5 .<br />
