At the same time as the new House was being built James was made<br />

Treasurer of the Trustees of Maud Heath’s Causeway, a post that he<br />

held until he died. He was elected Treasurer at the meeting held at “the<br />

house of John Mansell the Younger, known as the Dumb Post in the<br />

parish of Bremhill “ on 23 June 1794, when he received the balance of<br />

£104 17s 5 1 / 2 d. At this meeting the Trustees “thought fit and agreed”<br />

to give £50 towards the cost of repairing the bridge at Kellaways, this<br />

“being greatly out of repair" and they directed Mr Montague [sic]<br />

when the said reparation and amendments of the said<br />

Bridge shall be completed by the Parishes of Langley<br />

Burrell and Kellaways aforesaid to pay the same out of<br />

the monies that shall be then in his hands to the<br />

Surveyors of the said Parishes when application shall be<br />

made to him for the same 389<br />

His accounts record that he paid this £50 out on the same day........<br />

There are no entries in the Montagu bank accounts 390 that mention<br />

Maud Heath’s Causeway trustees; James did not open an account in his<br />

own bank for them.<br />

James was appointed High Sheriff of Wiltshire for 1795-1796 391 and in<br />

November 1795 he was called upon to organize a meeting of the county<br />

to “consider of an ADDRESS to his MAJESTY in consequence of the<br />

late, outrageous and savage offence offered to his person.”, which he<br />

duly set up for November 25 th in Devizes 392 . No less than 6 lords signed<br />

this request.<br />
