[there will be a] deliverance e’er long for prior Prisoners, by<br />
the Act of Grace, the Commissioners sitting daily and tomorrow<br />
or next day the Parliament meet 196<br />
The Act of Grace here probably refers to an Act of Reconciliation passed<br />
by Charles II in 1660 197 , designed to put the Civil War behind the<br />
country. Although a “general pardon” it did exclude a lot of categories;<br />
the (named) individuals who had signed Charles I’s death warrant for a<br />
start, but also such categories as those convicted of being “bigamists,<br />
buggerers, embezzlers from the Crown , kidnappers of Maids, murderers,<br />
pirates, rapists, Jesuits and Romanish priests”.<br />
James Montagu I died in February 1665 198<br />
James Montagu I and Mary had 11 sons and 2 daughters 199 . These were<br />
Walter 200 who died young 201 , James 202 , George 203 , Robert 204 , Henry 205 ,<br />
