this marriage Edward had moved back to Wiltshire again and was living<br />
at Notton, opposite <strong>Lackham</strong><br />
The Rev Higginson was rector of Rowde for many years, from 1794 332<br />
until his death in 1816 333 . He and Elizabeth had a number of children,<br />
two of their sons appear to have entered the church 334 .<br />
In September 1782 James Montagu V gave his brothers Edward and<br />
Admiral John Montagu <strong>Lackham</strong> and “premises in Lacock” in trust for his<br />
son James, his son George and his “daughters Elizabeth Higginson,<br />
Maria Poore, Eleanor Wallis wife of Joseph Wallis, Charlotte Smith<br />
wife of Rev Richard Smith, Annabel Montagu and Harriett Montagu”.<br />

A year later James IV leased a house in Lacock to Richard Pope and his<br />
wife Elizabeth on a 99 year lease for an annual rent of 2s 6d. Pope was<br />
James’ servant and the lease was “in recompense and recognition of the<br />
services that he has given to me and my family” 336<br />
James IV died in 1790 337 . His memorial stone is now in the south aisle<br />
of St. Cyriacs, having been moved from its original position during the<br />
nineteenth century.<br />
