When studying high-birefringent minerals, it is suggested that the quartz wedge is used<br />

instead <strong>of</strong> the first-order red plate. When inserting the quartz wedge, the isochromes in the<br />

four quadrants migrate in a characteristic way (Fig. 4-55).<br />
