Purpose
Complex Ions and the Spectrochemical Series
The purpose of this experiment is to develop the spectrochemical series by observing
the colors of several complex ions.
Description
Students will develop the spectrochemical series by investigating the colors of the
complex ions formed when solutions of various ligands are added to aqueous solutions
of copper(II), nickel(II), and cobalt(II) ions.
Materials
Chemicals
copper sulfate pentahydrate
nickel sulfate heptahydrate
cobalt sulfate heptahydrate
95% ethyl alcohol
possible sources of ligands:
hydrochloric acid
ammonia
sodium thiosulfate
oxalic acid
acetic acid
tartaric acid
EDTA
sodium bromide
ethylenediamine
dimethylglyoxime
Equipment
Hazards
pH paper
small test tubes
eyedroppers
Avoid skin contact with all the solutions; concentrations used in this experiment may
cause irritation. Goggles must be worn throughout the experiment.
