dreams. <strong>The</strong> patient feels fully alive again until a new<br />

depressive phase signals something new. This may be expressed<br />

in <strong>the</strong> following fashion: "I no longer have a feeling<br />

<strong>of</strong> myself. How could it happen that I should lose myself<br />

again? I have no connection with what is within me.<br />

It is all hopeless.... It will never be any better. Everything<br />

is pointless. I am longing <strong>for</strong> my <strong>for</strong>mer sense <strong>of</strong> being<br />

alive." An aggressive outbreak may follow, with reproaches<br />

against <strong>the</strong> analyst, and only after this outbreak<br />

will a new link become clear and new vitality be felt.<br />

THE STRUGGLE WITH THE INTROJECTS<br />

During an analysis, <strong>the</strong>re will also be times <strong>of</strong> depressive<br />

moods even after <strong>the</strong> patient has started to resist <strong>the</strong> demands<br />

<strong>of</strong> his introjects. He may, <strong>for</strong> example, resist <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

demands <strong>for</strong> achievement, although he has not yet fully<br />

freed himself from <strong>the</strong>m. <strong>The</strong>n he lands again in <strong>the</strong> cul-desac<br />

<strong>of</strong> making pointlessly excessive demands upon himself<br />

and he will only become aware <strong>of</strong> this when a depressive<br />

mood rises. This, <strong>for</strong> instance, may find expression in <strong>the</strong><br />

following way: "<strong>The</strong> day be<strong>for</strong>e yesterday I was so happy,<br />

my work went easily. I was able to do more work <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

exam than I had planned <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> whole week. <strong>The</strong>n I thought<br />

I must take advantage <strong>of</strong> this good mood and do ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />

chapter in <strong>the</strong> evening. I worked all evening but without<br />

any enthusiasm and <strong>the</strong> next day I couldn't do any more.<br />

I felt like such an idiot, nothing stayed in my head. I didn't<br />

want to see anyone ei<strong>the</strong>r, it felt like <strong>the</strong> depressions I used<br />

to have. <strong>The</strong>n I 'turned <strong>the</strong> pages back' and found where it<br />

had begun. I had spoiled my pleasure as soon as I made myself<br />

do more and more—but why? <strong>The</strong>n I remembered<br />
