Nevertheless, the superior corrosion resistance of sta<strong>in</strong>less steel rema<strong>in</strong>s a valid<br />

argument <strong>in</strong> favour of the material. Ferritic sta<strong>in</strong>less steels have turned out to be a<br />

preferred solution. S<strong>in</strong>ce they are not alloyed with nickel, ferritics are significantly<br />

lower <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>itial cost than austenitic grades. As pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g is a corporate-design<br />

requirement, lower-alloyed sta<strong>in</strong>less steels <strong>in</strong> the 12 % Cr range qualify for the<br />

application. These steels are therefore present <strong>in</strong> today’s roll<strong>in</strong>g stock, although less<br />

visibly.<br />
