As <strong>in</strong> the case of railway carriages,<br />

preference for sta<strong>in</strong>less steel was to a<br />

large extent an American phenomenon.<br />

The image of long-distance bus<br />

connections has been associated with the<br />

bright and sh<strong>in</strong>y appearance of sta<strong>in</strong>less<br />

steel buses s<strong>in</strong>ce the 1940’s. This tradition<br />

cont<strong>in</strong>ues to the present day.<br />

In <strong>Euro</strong>pe, studies focuss<strong>in</strong>g on the weld <strong>in</strong>tegrity of sta<strong>in</strong>less steels <strong>in</strong> bus and coach<br />

applications have demonstrated the technical superiority of sta<strong>in</strong>less steel. Safety<br />

aspects have been studied, based on fracture mechanics and impact-toughness test<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

The fatigue resistance of welded rectangular hollow section (RHS) profiles was<br />

evaluated accord<strong>in</strong>g to the <strong>Euro</strong>code 3 (1992) fatigue standard. Corrosion resistance was<br />

studied by salt-spray-chamber tests <strong>in</strong> a de-ic<strong>in</strong>g salt atmosphere and by field test<strong>in</strong>g for<br />

3 years under an urban bus. The mechanical tests show that <strong>in</strong> these applications<br />

austenitic sta<strong>in</strong>less steel EN 1.4310 (AISI 301) is a superior material and that lowcarbon<br />

12 % Cr alloyed sta<strong>in</strong>less steel EN 1.4003 is also competitive. Accord<strong>in</strong>g to life<br />

cycle cost (LCC) calculations, sta<strong>in</strong>less steels are competitive compared with carbon<br />

steels or alum<strong>in</strong>ium (Kyrölä<strong>in</strong>en et al. 2000).<br />

<strong>Euro</strong>pean bus manufacturers started us<strong>in</strong>g sta<strong>in</strong>less steel <strong>in</strong> the early 1990s.<br />

Development started specifically <strong>in</strong> Scand<strong>in</strong>avia, where a cold and humid climate, often<br />

<strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g the use of de-ic<strong>in</strong>g salts, expla<strong>in</strong>s operators’ will<strong>in</strong>gness to consider a<br />

corrosion-resistant material such as sta<strong>in</strong>less steel.<br />
