3. Coordinate literacy learning materials, instruction,<br />

interventions, assessments, professional development and<br />

funding with respect to sustaining a coherent K-12 system.<br />

4. Re-align and prioritize current District professional<br />

development funding and time in order to accomplish the above<br />

implementation with integrity.<br />

5. Commit to sufficient funding to ensure a comprehensive,<br />

long-term and sustainable literacy program.<br />

MMSD focused on literacy in 2011-12 through developing: increased fidelity in a<br />

90 minute literacy block K-5; developing a consistent e'" grade reading class for<br />

implementation in 2012-13; expanding explicit focus on content area reading and<br />

writing across the curriculum in grades 7-12. Additional literacy work completed<br />

by June 2012 includes;<br />

• A menu of evidence-based literacy interventions was determined.<br />

Professional development in Leveled Literacy Intervention was launched<br />

in June. Voyager was determined to be an additional intervention for K-6,<br />

as two options are required in each Tier.<br />

• DPI Kindergarten screener (PALS) was chosen in May. Initial<br />

informational webinar was supported in May.<br />

• Grades 1&2 universal screener was selected (AIMSweb). Primary<br />

Language Arts Assessment (PLAA) was re-focused as a diagnostic<br />

assessment tool.<br />

• Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) was administered 3/times in<br />

2011-12 in grades 3-7 in Reading. MAP will expand to grade 8 in 2012-<br />

13.<br />

The fall and spring All Staff Professional Development Days focused on building<br />

literacy core practices across the content areas. Fall sessions integrated<br />

Response to Intervention with a focus on literacy and the Spring session<br />

developed capacity with alignment to the Common Core State Standards and<br />

understanding of a Scope & Sequence. Principals were provided professional<br />

development, materials and resources to support these days with their respective<br />

staff.<br />

Professional development, literacy resources and interventions have been funded<br />

cooperatively in an inter-departmental initiative to focus resources on literacy in<br />

2011-12. Departments that provide time, staff, resources and professional<br />

development include: Curriculum & Assessment; Educational Services;<br />

Professional Development; Assistant Superintendent's Offices; State & Federal<br />

Grants (Title I); REaL Grant; Diversity; and Equity & Family Involvement.<br />

All 5 <strong>School</strong> Support Teams will include a central office literacy representative in<br />

2012-13 to ensure fidelity of literacy core practice and implementation in all<br />

classrooms as they work closely with each IRT in their cluster.<br />

The Professional Development Department hired a K-8 Literacy Teacher Leader<br />

to assist in the coordination of literacy across all departments.<br />
