"The Numbers Page"; and a special symposium on "Exhibition and Distribution: The Tics that Bind" One of the hotter topics at ShoWest will center around the promotion and merchandising of films Faced this year with what many industrv' insiders consider a "glut" of product, both exhibitors and distributors may find that their marketing efforts will make the difference between a week of poor grosses and months of happy ticket sales One important aspect of film merchandising is promotion at the point-of-sale: onesheets, standees, intheatrc promotional materials and the like Too often, however, exhibitors may not get materials on time (or at all), or are not aware of what is available in the way of p-o-p materials and thus cannot request them from the studios The problem is really one of timeliness and communication since the merchandising of a film is a collaborative effon. final studio approval on a promotional campaign may not be forthcoming until scant weeks before a film is released, leaving little time to announce their availability. What is needed is a central clearinghouse that can keep tabs on films and their concomitant promotional material; a hotline that exhibitors can contact to find out what is available in the way of merchandising aids, and when these aids will be available Such a hotline service should be established by those organizations representing the industry: the MPAA, TAC and NATO <strong>Boxoffice</strong> would be pleased to get the ball rolling and act as a conduit for this valuable infonnalion What do you think?
