Francisco (MGM) — Reissue. Clark
Gable, Jeanette MacDonald, Jack Holt. Everyone
knows th:s is part of "Some of the Best,"
so \vc booked with great confidence—only
get a letdown. It was not too well attended
should have been. Why are they skeptical
of an oldie? Played Wed., Thui's. Weather:
Unn, Mo. Rural and small town patronage.
Three Godfathers (MGM)—John Wayne,
Pedro Aimendariz, Harry Cai-ey jr. I've run
much better pictmes but not many that
seemed to please as much as this. Here's a
Christmas featui-e for you exhibitors
haven't played it yet. This is a pictiu-e
a western background that the women
went for, too. An excellent cast plus good
color and a fah, story gave me one of the
f
best weekends at the boxoffice in ages. I
went overboard on publicity, but it got them
MONOGRAM
C'Babe Kuth Story, The (Mono)—WilUam
Bendix, Claire Tievor, Charles Bickford. I
this the week of the world series and
expected better than average at the boxoffice
was disappointed. The picture is okay
outdated. Played Sat., Sim., Mon.
[ shows a big improvement in this one, and
action fans seemed pleased. I believe
this series will take hold. Doubled it with
of this series, to about 90 per cent of
business. Played Fri., Sat. Weather:
Fathoms Deep (Mono)—Lon Chaney jr.,
Lake, Tanis Chandler. This is an
imusual picture and very good. The Ansco
color shows possibilities although water re-
gives it an unreal tint in places. The
is only fair, photography good, but it's
enough for best playing time. Our busiwas
off on it. Played Tues., Wed., Thurs.
Jim Dunbar the Victim
When Film Overplayed
STREETS OF LAREDO (Para)—Macdonald
Carey, William Holden, William
Bendix. Once again after an over-running
of a picture, I came in on the tail
end of the business that was left over,
and took a beating. There was nothing
wrong with the picture or the co-hit,
"Dumbo" (RKO), except that everyone
had seen them and so went to another
theatre. Both features had the best to
offer in entertainment values and should
fo well in first run situations. Played
PARAMOUNT
Accused, The (Parai—Loretta Young, Robert
Cummings, Wendell Corey. This is a
much better story than I had expected and
has a cast that provides entertainment, but
even with "lucky seat" night and a stage
show, I couldn't get a crowd. I barely took
in fUm rental, so by the time I paid off for
tlie trimmings, 1 was 'way in the hole. This
is definitely not small town fare. Does anyone
do business on this type of picture?
Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's
Court, A (Para)—Bing Crosby, Rhonda Fleming,
Sir Cedric Hardwicke. This is another
picture trying to rum Bing Crosby.
It's hard
to do, but this type definitely helps to lose
popularity for him here. The gross was below
Trailer Put This One
On Must-See List
YOU'RE MY EVERYTHING (20th-
Fox) —Dan Dailey, Anne Baxter, Anne
Revere. Dan Dailey scored a hit in tliis
with Anne Baxter. It is in line with
Dailey's usual dance and song attractions
but has an interesting story centered
around the life of a sweet little girl who
plays the part of their daughter who is
just as much interested in making motion
pictures as her mother and father,
who are stars. Dan Dailey does not draw
too well here ordinarily, but this picture
in Technicolor came through fine. The
trailer, which was very good, helped put
this one on the must-see list of my regular
patrons. Played Tues., Wed. Weather:
Great Gatsby, The (Para) — Alan Ladd,
Betty Field, Macdonald Carey. Like Bing
Crosby, Alan Ladd is going to be hurt in
popularity if Paramount keeps throwing these
sad, hard-to-swallow plots their way. I sincerely
hope Ladd's newest picture, "Chicago
Deadline," will give the man a chance to come
out of this Gatsby thing. Patrons were not
pleased and the boxoffice did about par.
Doubled with "Bodyguard" (RKO). Played
Sat. (preview). Sun., Mon. Weather: Rainy
Kas. Second and third downtown, run
Red, Hot and Blue (Para)—Betty Hutton,
Victor Mature, Frank Loesser. It was a little
slow in spots but Betty finally brought it to
a lively climax. Betty was the whole show,
as usual. However, William Demarest was a
lot of help. It's comedy, and that's what
people want. Played Thurs., Fri. Weather:
Cotulla, Tex. Small towm patronage.
Shaggy (Para) — Brenda Joyce, George
Eureka, Mont. Small town patronage. • • *
Sorrowful Jones (Para)—Bob Hope, Lucille
CONNECTICUT YANKEE IN KING
ARTHUR'S COURT, A (Para)—Bing
Crosby, Rhonda Fleming, Sir Cedric
Hardwicke. This is a swell show from
end to end. I ran this same story years
ago—1 think Fox made it and Will Rogers
starred in the picture. This version
with Bing Crosby is a long way from the
other one but they are both fine. Played
Quinlan Theatre, Quinlan, Tex. Small town
Unconquered (Para)—Gary Cooper, Paulelte
RKO RADIO
Bambi (RKO)—Reissue. Technicolor feature
length cartoon. We played this picture
one night and business was extra good. I
think this picture will pay off in any small
town. It has beautiful color. Played Friday.
Weather: Fair and cold. O. Fomby, Paula
Theatre, Homer, La. Small town patronage.
Clay Pigeon, The (RKO)—Bill WiUiams,
Barbara Hale, Richard Quine. A tense little
drama, well made, which has absolutely no
drawing power for a small town. We can say
nothing against the picture but our gross
would have been lower if we had not started
the first chapter of "Batman and Robin"
(Col) with it. We wouldn't have bought the
picture if we had had a choice, but of course
it came on a deal for others. Played Fri.,
Crown Theatre, Lincohi, Ark. Rural and
Green Promise, The (RKO)—Marguerite
Chapman, Walter Brennan, Robert Paige.
This is a small town hit—a 4-H picture, and
it has a bit of comedy and romance and
should do business. It failed here due to the
first snowstorm of the season. Comments
were good and business 75 per cent in spite
of weather conditions. Played Thurs., Fri.,
Sat.—Ken Christianson, Roxy Theatre, Washburn,
N. D. SmaU town
Mighty Joe Young (RKO)—Terry Moore,
Ben Johnson, Robert Armstrong. Here is a
really entertaining picture. It has suspense,
a good story and wonderful tricl^photography.
It really is amazing what they can do with
a camera. Played Fri., Sat. Weather: Fair.
—Pi-ank Burdick, Avon Theatre, Moorcroft,
Wyo. Small town patronage.
Roughshod (RKO)—Robert SterUng, Gloria
Grahame, Claude Jarman jr. Here is a good
western drama which failed to do business
because it lacked star power. All who came
were pleased and I broke even on the engagement.
Played Wed., Thurs.—E. M. Frelburger.
Paramount Theatre, Dewey, Okla.
Small town patronage. • • •
iiSo Dear to My Heart (RKO)—Burl Ives,
