Condolences to Harvc.v Thorpe and wife on
the death of their dauehter. He's the exhibitor
at Crosby, Minn. . Robert
Penn Warren of the University of Minne.sota,
whose Pulitzer prize-winning novel, "All the
King's Men," was filmed by Columbia, told
newspaper interviewers upon his return here
from the New York premiere that the picture
is excellent and he's completely satisfied
with it. The Morning Ti-jbime in its story
commented: "Some cynics might feel that
an unprecedented reaction like that might
seriously endanger Wan-en's future relations
with the west-coa.sters, who are accustomed
to screams of rage from their beneficiaries,
but the University of Minnesota professor is
undaunted."
.
Ralph Cramblett, UA district manager, was
in from Chicago . to Florence
Harris, U-I cashier, whose father, William
Madigan, a booth operator at the State Theatre,
died DeWolfe. Paramount
player, concluded a successful two-week engagement
at the Hotel Nicollet Minnesota
Terrace.
Harold Lloyd, screen star and chief potentate
of the Shriners who was here for a
Shrine ceremonial, garnered considerable
publicity. Among other things, he entertained
the kiddy patients at the Shrine hospital
for crippled children.
season. Sol Torodor ai'ranged the affair.
And, urges Chief Barker Ted Bolnick, members
should be sure to plan to attend the
annual election of officers in the clubrooms
November 28. There'll be a free buffet supper
at 6:30 p. m. and, as an added entertainment
feature, Bennie Berger, principal
owner of the Minneapolis Lakers championship
professional league basketball team, will
liave on display the film showing the complete
Lakers-College all-star basketball game,
recently played in Chicago.
Tom Hetherington, Wheaton, Minn., exhibitor,
was here for the Shrine ceremonial .
Burtus Bishop, MGM district manager, was
here for four days . . . A. E. Schiller, Republic
home office, was here . Mui-phy resigned
from the Paramount sales staff to
join Republic . . . Illness compelled Joe Rosen,
Paramount booker, to take his first day off
in ten years.
Demands for earlier clearance continue to
roll in. The Parkway, independent neighborhood
hou.se, is asking for 35 days, the same
as is now enjoyed by the Nile in the same
area. The Broadway, Camden and Empress
in north Minneapolis, are asking for 39 days
in place of their present 56. The Boulevard,
a W. R. Frank operation, wants to be placed
in the 28-day slot, the earliest for neighborhood
houses here, but is being offered 35 days.
Harry F. French, Minnesota Amusement
Co. president, says he doesn't like at all the
advent of triple featuring and he isn't happy
over the increasing double featuring. He believes
such policies to be "fundamentally
wrong"—doesn't subscribe to them at all, he
says, and his circuit will not go for them.
He points oui that this has been fundamentally
and predominantly "a single feature
territory" and he has hoped it would
remain that way . . . S. D. Kane, North Central
Allied executive director, back from a
brief vacation.
Joe Wolf is back after a visit to his Texas
drive-in interests . . . Few pictures have received
so much praise and attention from the
critics and columnists as "Quartet " now in
its second week at the Lyceum, legitimate
roadshow house. Even the Star's drama and
music editor, John K. Shei-man, reviewed it
and lavished praise on it. "Lost Boundaries"
also came in for much praise at the RKO
Orpheum . . . Stage shows are having another
inning here. Xavier Cugat and his orchestra
currently head one at Radio City, and the
RKO Orpheum, starting Thanksgiving day,
will have another Palace vaudeville unit.
Mike Guttman has resigned as manager of
the Minnesota Amusement Co. theatres at
Aberdeen, S. D., following his purchase of the
World there from his brother Dave. He was
succeeded by Nort Rosevold. transferred from
the Lyric, Duluth, who, in turn, was replaced
by Cy Duncan, formerly assistant
manager of the Palace, Superior, Wis . . .
The new Bob Hope picture, "The Great
Lover." will have its Twin City premiere at
the Radio City Theatre Thanksgiving week
. . . Twentieth-Fox's "Man of the Prairie"
will be the Thanksgiving week offering at the
State here, another Minnesota Amusement
Co. Loop house.
