On Estimates List<br />
NEW YORK— Among 12 pictures on the<br />
riieen list of joint estimates of current films<br />
issued for the week ending November 15 are<br />
two each from RKO, Republic and Columbia<br />
and one each from MGM. UA, Pai-amount<br />
and 20th Century-Fox.<br />
Three are recommended for children's pror;ims.<br />
The list follows: "Arctic Fury" (RKOi,<br />
for families and children's proams:<br />
"Battleground" (MGMi, which is<br />
:.iied as exceptional and also is recommended<br />
for adults and young people over 12 years<br />
of age: "Beyond the Forest" (WBi, adults:<br />

Herbert J. Yates Is Sued<br />
By M. J. Siegel's Widow<br />
NEW YORK—Herbert J. Yates, Republic<br />
president, has been named defendant in an<br />
$180,000 federal court action brought by Ethel<br />
B. Siegel, widow of Morris B. Siegel and administratrix<br />
of his estate. Siegel, onetime'<br />
Republic president, died in 1948. According<br />
to the complaint, Siegel had a 20 per cent<br />
interest in a $1,000,000 loan made by the late<br />
Jules E. Brulatour to Setay Corp., Yates'<br />
holding company. Yates has paid only $20,-<br />
000 of Seigel's share, the suit declares.<br />
The action was originally filed in Brooklyn<br />
federal court but was transferred to New<br />
federal court November 14. Yates.<br />

and Harry Goetz, former Republic diare<br />
scheduled for examination before<br />

(Gordon Contee Appointed<br />
Pittsburgh Manager<br />
— Gordon Contee, sales<br />
manager at 20th-Fox here, has been transjferred<br />
to Pittsbm-gh as manager, according<br />

;Loss Put at $100,000<br />
N. Y.—Fire destroyed the Smalley<br />
Theatre building here early November 14<br />
with an estimated loss of $100,000. Five hours<br />

projection booth but fire department offileials<br />
said had no connection with the secjond<br />

blaze, the origin of which was unknown.<br />

in for the affair with other members of Variety<br />
International. Wade Pearson and Morton<br />
Gerber handled the party with Frank<br />
Boucher handling the welfare awards with<br />
the assistance of Chief Barker Jake Flax.<br />
The previous Saturday the 'Variety Club<br />
dedicated a cardiac clinic at Emergency hospital.<br />
This clinic and one at Children's hospital<br />
were pledged by the Variety Club during<br />
the Washington Heart Ass'n's recent<br />
drive. Jake Flax, chief barker; Fred S. Kogod,<br />
chairman of the welfare committee;<br />
Samuel H. Kauffman, president of Emergency<br />
hospital; James C. Capossela. administrator<br />
of the hospital, and members of the<br />
Variety Club Welfare committee were present.<br />
The public relations class from the Institute<br />
of Contemporary Arts here last week<br />
had as its first guest speaker, John Tassos,<br />
publicity representative of Paramount here.<br />
He spoke on the value of publicity and exploitation<br />
at Washington theatres.<br />
"The Lord's Prayer," a film of one of the<br />
most moving senriments in the Bible, has<br />
been completed by Al Sherman, television<br />
film consultant and producer, as a sign-off<br />
spot for video stations. Allen Phillips, former<br />
minister and current staff announcer foi<br />
station WOL, narrated while Ken Adams,<br />
member of the Royal Photographic Society<br />
and associate of the National Photographic<br />
Society, supervised the filming.<br />
Hazel McCarthy, Metro, brings regards<br />
from Ann Griffin who is now booking for<br />
20th Century-Fox in Minneapolis. Hazel and<br />
Ann met in Chicago last weekend . . . Sidney<br />
Lust has been very generous with his Redskins<br />
football tickets. Each week he has<br />
been distributing several among Filmrow employes.<br />

Society Notables Attend<br />
'Idol' Benefit Opening<br />
NEW YORK— Society,<br />
as well as theatrical<br />
and political notables, attended the opening<br />
of David O. Selznick's "The Fallen Idol" at<br />
the Sutton Theatre November 14 for the<br />
benefit of the Prescott Neighborhood House.<br />
The picture opened its regular run November<br />
15. .<br />
The benefit committee used "A Night in a<br />
London Theatre" as the motif for the British<br />
film showing and all the atmosphere of<br />
a typical evening at a London theatre was<br />
reproduced, from the "queue-line" outside<br />
the Sutton to entertainers on the sidewalk.<br />
Debutantes acted as tea girls, usherettes and<br />
the usual flower girls selling violets. Banners,<br />
coat-of-arms and other material was<br />
flown here to redecorate the theatre for the<br />
event. Arthur Treacher, film and stage actor,<br />
acted as a London "booby" to maintain<br />
law and order.<br />
Among the theatrical celebrities at the<br />
event, which was covered by NBC television,<br />
were Selznick, Rhonda Fleming, Louis Jourdan<br />
and John Agar, Selznick contract players,<br />
and Lilli Palmer, Sir Cedric Hardvricke,<br />
Constance Collier, Peggy Ann Gamer and<br />
Lenora Corbett.<br />
Schary, Dr. Handel Speak<br />
To New York Audiences<br />
NEW YORK—Two MGM executives,<br />
Dore<br />
Schary, vice-president in charge of production,<br />
and Dr. Leo Handel, head of the research<br />
department, delivered lectures in New<br />
York City during the week.<br />
Schary spoke on "Hollywood Yesterday.<br />
Today and Tomorrow" at Town Hall Friday<br />
1 18 1 before leaving for the west coast the<br />
same day.<br />
Dr. Handel addressed the members of the<br />
film industry class of the Dramatic Workshop<br />
on "Audience Penetration" November<br />
17. He explained various studies to test the<br />
appeal of a finished picture, including personal<br />
interviews with scientific questions<br />
about titles, stories, stars and star ratings.<br />
