... It is also reported that Norman Elson,<br />
head of Trans-Lux Theatres, is negotiating<br />
for the pmxhase of five houses now operated<br />
by Stedlom Theatres. These are the<br />
Beacon, Dale, Midtown and Yorktown, New<br />
York, and the recently built Tryon Theatre<br />
in Amsterdam, N. Y. Ti'ans-Lux has been<br />
ui an expansive mood since last year when<br />
it<br />
took over seven Brandt theatres.<br />
The New York Film Board of Trade has<br />
extended the scope of its weekly meetings.<br />
Its sessions now feature talks by authorities<br />
in various fields that might affect distribution.<br />
The members recently heard a talk on<br />
theatre television by Nat Halpern, television<br />
consultant for Fabian Theatres. Next<br />
Wednesday (23) Louis Phillips of Paramount<br />
will discuss the antitrust decrees. He was<br />
scheduled to have spoken last Wednesday<br />
but was in San Fi-ancisco on business that<br />
day. The board will hold nomination and<br />
election meetings early next month.<br />

Disney to Publish<br />
'Cinderella' Tunes<br />
NEW YORK—The Walt Disney Music Co.,<br />
which was organized to publish all music<br />
written for and used in Disney features and<br />
cartoons and to handle outside music, got<br />
off to a good start with "Mule Tran," one<br />
of the most successful popular tunes of recent<br />
years.<br />
Six of the songs from "Cinderella," Disney'.s<br />
next cartoon feature, will be published December<br />
1. The songs, all by Mack David,<br />
Jerry Livingston and Al Hoffman, are: "A<br />
Dream Is a Wish," "Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo,"<br />
"So This Is Love," "Cinderella," "Sing, Sweet<br />
Nightingale" and "The Work Song."<br />
The firm has established offices in New<br />
York, Los Angeles, Chicago, London, Paris<br />
and Sydney, Australia, under the supervision<br />
of F:-ed Raphael, vice-president and general<br />
manager.<br />
J. Raymond Bell Is Given<br />
Columbia Executive Post<br />
NEW YORK— J. Raymond Bell, formerly<br />
associated with Loew's Theatres in Washington<br />
and MGM in New York, has joined<br />
the home office executive staff of Columbia<br />
Pictures to take over the duties formerly<br />
handled by the late Hal Hode. These include<br />
Washington representative for both the<br />
home office and the studio and contacts<br />
with local censor boards throughout the<br />
country.<br />
Bell, a member of the bar, left MGM to<br />
become public relations director for Capital<br />
Airlines in Washington, and he is closing<br />
his own public relations office there to Join<br />
Columbia. Paul Streger, Broadway producer<br />
and artists' representative, has joined Columbia<br />
as eastern story editor. Streger was associated<br />
with the Leland Hayward office 13<br />
years as manager of their New York producing<br />
office.<br />
George F. Dembow Leads<br />
Federation Fund Drive<br />
NEW YORK—George F. Dembow. vicepresident<br />
in charge of sales for National<br />
Screen Service, has been named head of<br />
the amusements and allied industries division<br />
of the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies<br />
of New York drive for 1949. The<br />
federation requires $16,500,000 for mainte-<br />
nance and $34,000,000 for its building fund to<br />
meet increased welfare demands.<br />
The film industry, legitimate theatres, individual<br />
artists, talent agencies, concessionaires<br />
and venders will participate in the drive.<br />
Dembow's first official act was to name William<br />
Brandt of Brandt Theatres and John<br />
Chapman, New York Daily News drama editor,<br />
co-chairmen of the artists, agents, music<br />
and entertainment committee.<br />
John Farrow has been borrowed from<br />
Paramount by RKO to meg "A White Rose<br />
for Judie."<br />
